Beautiful ensemble of temple buildings, located a hundred kilometers from Nizhny Novgorod, located on the banks of the Volga River, in the village of Makarievo. Quadrangular area, enclosed by walls with round towers at the corners and in the middle of each wall gate belongs Zheltovodskogo Makary monastery.

Monastery monk Macarius founded (later canonized) in 1435. After the invasion of the Tatars from the monastery almost nothing left and Macarius had to go to another place. Two centuries later, the monastery was rebuilt and named in honor of the founder - Makary. Earlier, the monastery was between the lake and the Volga Yellow, but in the nineteenth century there was a merger of the lake to the river and the water came right up to the walls of the monastery, leaving the memory of the lake only the second name - Zheltovodsky. By decree of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, in 1641 in Makarievo (village formed around the monastery) was established by the Fair, whose revenues went to the accomplishment of the monastery. The rapid growth of the fair contributed to the construction of the most beautiful temples of the monastery and the transformation of the village to the district town (1779).

Today the monastery is a single architectural ensemble, main buildings which date back to the seventeenth century. Business Card monastery - restored the southern gate and the main treasure - the Trinity Cathedral with stunning original frescoes. Entrance to the monastery is under the Gate Church of the Archangel Michael. Behind the high walls of the monastery lies the founder of the monastery - in the old rotunda, next to Assumption church and bell tower.

Zheltovodsky Macarius Monastery - one of the oldest architectural complexes of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
