The so-called Venetian Walls - a grand idea of his fortification of Nicosia, which was created under the guidance of Italian military engineers Francisco and Julio Barbaro Savordzhano. Construction, or rather modernization of existing fortifications began in 1567 shortly after the capture of the Venetian territory and went on for several years. During this time, the new owners of Nicosia demolished several old palaces and churches for building materials and at the same time in such a way to improve the overview of the surrounding locality areas. In addition, the project engineers Pedieos river remained outside the city walls. On the one hand this was done to protect against possible flooding of Nicosia, as well as to fill the river water moat around the perimeter of the wall.

However, all the works of the builders were in vain - soon, namely in 1570, the city without much effort was captured by the Ottomans, led Admiral Lala Mustafa Pasha. And the Venetians did not have time to complete construction of its grandiose defensive structures around the city.

At the moment, the circumference of the strengthening of about three miles, and 11 are located on the perimeter of the bastions in the shape of regular pentagons. These towers are named after the famous Italian aristocratic families of Nicosia, which provided funds for the construction of the wall. They also are equipped with three main gates, through which it was possible to get into the city: Porta San Domenico (Pafos Gate) Porta del Proveditore (Kyrenia Gate) and the Port Julian (Famagusta Gate).
