Amazing cave church of Panagia Hrizospiliotissa located in the village of Kato Deftera, which is only 11 kilometers to the south-west of Nicosia, is considered one of the most ancient temples of the island. Some historians believe that in the Bronze Age people in this place to pray one of the pagan goddess of fertility.

The very same church, which is also called the Church of the Holy Mother of God Golden Cave was based, as is clear from its name, in honor of the Virgin. According to one legend, once upon a time, local residents discovered in a rock cave in which flickered some light. When they went inside, they found there is a wonderful two-sided icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Then they built a temple in the place. However, it is not known exactly when and by whom it was created.

Later, a unique icon was transferred to the church of St. Nicholas, which stands in the center of Deftera, where it is stored until now. But every year in August, the feast of the Assumption, it solemnly brought into the cave church of Panagia Hrizospiliotissa. Then the village held a religious fair.

The church consists of three small rooms cut into the rock. Between themselves, these rooms are connected by narrow corridors. Scientists believe that this place was previously a monastery. Now the entrance to the caves, which are located high enough above the ground, for the convenience of visitors was undeveloped reinforced ladder.

Currently, the church is very popular among young girls who come to the cave temple to pray to the Virgin and ask her happiness in marriage and healthy children.
