Kyrenia Gate is one of three passes through the walls, which was surrounded by the old town of Nicosia. The name of the gate was due to the fact that for them began the road leading to Kyrenia, or Girne as this city is called. They were built in 1562 and is one of the most honorable of inputs, so called Del Providetore, which means "governor." However, most of this input used simple peasants and traders, who were waiting for him every morning opening to get into the city, where they sell their products - vegetables, fruits, fish, poultry, pottery, etc. During the passage through the gate fees charged, and it was different for those who arrived on a cart or in a carriage, and for those who have passed on foot.

Remarkably, Kyrenia Gate are many times a miniature copy of the city gate of Beijing - its creator, architect Savornioni, designed the drawings of the famous traveler Marco Polo, who visited China.

In 1821, at the initiative of the Sultan Mahmud II it conducted the first serious repair the gate, and at the beginning of XX century, when Nicosia was dominated by the British, the gate was almost completely reconstructed - a part of the fortress wall had to disassemble, to expand the entry. To this day the gate was only the arch and the room where he once housed the guard. In addition, rising to the second floor of the gate, you can get to the very ramparts, a clear view of the surroundings.

Currently under construction is the information office for tourists, where you can learn about the most interesting places in Nicosia.
