Byzantine Museum, which is located in Nicosia, has probably one of the richest collections of works of art belonging to the Byzantine era. It was created under the auspices of the Foundation Archbishop Makarios III. For visitors to the museum first opened its doors on January 18, 1982 - the opening ceremony held Archbishop Chrysostomos I and the then President of the Republic of Cyprus Spyros Cipriano. At that time, all the treasures of the institution have been placed only in one room. However, after six years, the area occupied by the museum has expanded considerably, as his collection. To a large extent it is replenished objects illegally exported from the country after the seizure of power in the Turkish north of the island, which were subsequently returned to the Republic.
The exhibition features about 230 icons, written in the period from IX to XIX century, old books, religious utensils, vestments of the Orthodox clergy. All these items are located in three large halls in the premises of the Cultural Center of the Fund.
Particular attention should be paid to the museum of icons that have been created in the XII century, after all that time considered the "golden age" of Byzantine iconography. In addition, the real star of the collection is a fragment of mosaic VI century, which was originally in the church of Panagia Kanakaria Litrankomi in the village, and then she, like many other valuable works of art have been illegally sold abroad, but eventually returned to Cyprus. Also in the museum you can see fragments of the magnificent frescoes of the XV century Church of Christ Antifonitisa.
The Art Gallery presents paintings by European artists of the period from the 16th century. to 19 in., mainly on religious themes.
