The ruins of the fortress is a cultural monument. Thanks to the enthusiasm of scientists and authorities, archaeological excavations were carried out here regularly for four years - from 1986 to 1990. Spend their group of employees of the Historical Museum Loma.

About Almus information is not much, most found in ancient sources and in a number of Western European maps of the city designated in the period from the XVI-XVIII centuries.

Archaeological studies in which it was studied about 70 meters of the fortress wall in the West, have shown that the width of the wall was more than two meters, and length - about two hundred. The shape of the fort looked like an irregular pentagon. Approximate size of the construction as a whole can be called such, two hundred and fifty meters from the north, two hundred meters from the east and the west, and 220 meters to the south. At the corners round towers rose. The total area of ​​the strengthening of more than four hectares.

In addition, during the excavations, scientists have found many artifacts that can be traced to antiquity and the Middle Ages. Today they can be seen in the city Historical Museum Loma.
