National Museum of Krakow - the Art Museum, located in the Polish city of Krakow.

The National Museum was established in 1879. Originally the museum was located on the upper floors of the Cloth Hall in the main square in the old town. The collection was going slowly, mostly it consisted of gifts of artists and collectors. These were the works of Polish artists and sculptures of the 19th century, and European authors. In the early 20th century, the museum began to collect other valuable exhibits: coins, archaeological and ethnographic findings, historical documents. The first director of the museum was appointed Vladislav Luskevich - artist and historian. He organized several exhibitions, including the jubilee exhibition dedicated to Kosciusko and John Kochanowski. Under the direction of the next Director - Roper Felix, museum's collection includes more than 100 thousand copies of the securities. When Roper created the first branch of the Cracow Museum.

Construction of a building for the museum began in 1934, but was interrupted by World War II. The building was fully completed only in 1992.

During the war, the collection was looted by German troops. After 1945, the Polish government has returned many of the captured pieces. Nevertheless, more than 1,000 jobs have remained lost.

The museum consists of 21 department, which are divided into different periods of art, 11 galleries and 2 libraries. It contains 780,000 objects of art, special emphasis is placed on the Polish art.
