The ruins of the medieval church of St. Barbara are located in the north-eastern part of Melnik, just below Kordopulov home - another well-known landmarks.

It is not known exactly when the church was built. Tradition says that it belonged to the family Kordopulov. Most likely, the temple was erected in the XIII-XIV century, in the heyday of the city. During archaeological excavations in 2008 at a depth of 60 cm were found fragments of colored frescoes. This supports the hypothesis that this place once stood even more ancient church.

The ruins of the temple gives only a vague idea of its former greatness and beauty. The stone building is not completely survived. It is best to have survived the altar area with apse. There are still standing walls, in some places reaching almost 4 meters high, and the floor is paved with stone slabs. Almost completely preserved the apse with niches and window openings. The second room of the temple was not so lucky: it survived only a part of the walls and foundation stone columns.

Saint Barbara, in whose honor was named the church, is the patron of the sudden death of the deceased, and therefore did not manage to confession and receive Holy Communion. Barbara lived in the III century. Her father was a Gentile. When he learned that his daughter has secretly converted to Christianity, he subjected her to cruel tortures and then beheaded. As a martyr who suffered for their faith in Christ, Barbara was raised to the rank of saint.

Locals put on the former site of the altar the icon of St. Barbara. These are also candles, coins and food.
