Victorian Art Centre - located in Melbourne's cultural complex, consisting of theaters and concert halls. It is here that regularly give concerts and present Australian ballet troupe, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Opera and the Melbourne Theatre.

A place where today is located the Art Center, the inhabitants of the city has always been associated with the arts and entertainment - previously it housed a circus, theater, roller skating, theater and dance club. After World War II it was decided that Melbourne needed a unified concept of the cultural center, but the development and approval of the project dragged on for almost 15 years. Only in 1960 it was selected the architect of the future complex - Roy Grounds, and the construction started in 1973 and lasted more than 10 years. In 1982, on the banks of the Yarra River in the street St Kilda was opened concert hall Hammer Hall, and two years later - Theatre building.

Unusual art center is as a concert hall and theater building housed mostly underground. Hammer Hall, located close to the river, which was originally planned to put all the ground almost entirely to provide a panoramic view between the theater, the river and the station Flinders Street Station. However, during construction there were problems with the foundation and the building had to lift off the ground on three floors.

The art center is composed of several units. The biggest of them - the Concert Hall Hammer Hall. This is a separate building, which also houses a small theater of the Black Box. Other entities - the State Theatre, the Drama Theatre and studio Fairfax - located in the theater building. In addition, so-called "Sidney Myer Music Bowl" - a platform under the open sky, which can accommodate up to 15 thousand people - is also in charge of administration of the Art Center. This stadium hosts a variety of music concerts and shows.

The project included the construction of Roy Grounds over the center of a huge 115-meter spire, which became one of the first structures in Australia, designed using computer technology. The spire was installed in 1981, but by the mid-1990s began to show signs of wear metal. New spire reaching 162 meters in height, and exactly the same as the previous design, established in 1996. Metal "web" spire resembles a stack of ballerinas and the Eiffel Tower at the same time.
