Góra Kalwaria - Polish city located in the Mazowieckie voivodship on the Vistula River, 25 km south-east of Warsaw. Originally the town was called simply Gora (literally "mountain"), but in the eighteenth century was renamed in Góra Kalwaria ("Mount Calvary"). Currently Gora Kalwaria is a modern industrial city, which launched production of food and sports equipment. Góra Kalwaria - the birthplace of Wolf Messing.
The existence of the village of Gora is known since the beginning of the thirteenth century . The settlement was completely destroyed during the Swedish occupation known as the Deluge, which occurred in 1666 . At the end of the seventeenth century, the village became the property of the bishop of Poznan, Stefan Virzbovski who decided to found a new city on the site of the destroyed settlement . His idea was to build the so-called religious center, providing various kinds of services to citizens . The bishop was very encouraged by the fact that the local landscape reminded him of the Holy Land . Construction work began in 1670, the urban development plan was based on a medieval map of Jerusalem . The bishop invited the Dominicans and the city Bernardine soon the town was built up monasteries, churches . After the death of the bishop of the city began a period of decline: there were demolished churches and chapels, and in 1883, Góra Kalwaria was deprived of city rights . In the early nineteenth century it had lifted the ban on Jewish settlement in the city, after which Góra Kalwaria became one of the main centers of Hasidic Judaism .
Here you can see the system of urban development, made in the form of a Latin cross and plans of medieval Jerusalem. It is believed that the construction work involved the famous designer Gameren Tilman. In the center of the city remained the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in the mid-seventeenth century by Jakub Fontana. Also in the center of Góra Kalwaria preserved synagogues.
