City gate in Mdina
   Photos: City gate in Mdina

Triumphal Arch was built in 1724 on the orders of the Grand Master Vilhena at the site of the old castle gate with a drawbridge. The gates are decorated with carved reliefs depicting the three patron saints of Malta - St. Publius (the first Bishop of Malta), St. Paul and St. Agatha.

Previously held near the moat, dug even Arabs in the IX century. Now there are growing orange trees, and part of the moat given over to sports facilities.
