It is believed that the inhabitants of Szeged is called St. Stephen's Square, "the grain market" since 1880. However, this name is mentioned before the flood in 1879. The main attraction of the area - the water tower, which is functional at the same time growing its appeal, was designed and built Shilardom Zielinski at the end of 1904. This architectural monument is made of reinforced concrete and is designed to store 1004, 8 cubic meters of water. During the construction of the towers were used advanced technology of the time (including the use of reinforced concrete), making it a unique building in Hungary that period. The height of the water tower together with the flagpole, also made of reinforced concrete, is 54, 9 meters.

If in the past century, the area of St. Stephen served as a market, it is now a memorial park and amusement park. In turn, the Water Tower, although a popular tourist destination, has retained its original function. In addition, the tower is an excellent observation deck, offering views of Szeged, Tisza river expanse of the Great Plains. Inside the tower is installed Foucault pendulum, which are known to demonstrate the Earth's rotation around its axis.
