Ancient Pella - the capital of the legendary Macedonian kingdom and the birthplace of the famous general of Alexander the Great. The ruins of the ancient city located a few kilometers from the modern Pella and about 40 km from Thessaloniki.

The first mention of the pellet found in the writings of the ancient Greek historian Herodotus. At the end of the 5th century BC Macedonian king Archelaus moved the capital from the holy city of Egi in Pella and built a magnificent palace, a list of which was assigned to the ancient Greek artist Zeuxis famous. The town began to rapidly grow and develop, and in the early 4th century Pell was already the largest city in Macedonia. Highest same town reached during the reign of Philip and his famous son, Alexander the Great. In 168 BC, Pella was conquered and plundered by the Romans. Some time Pella remained the capital of one of the districts of the Roman province of Macedonia, but subsequently lost to their status Thessaloniki. Over time, the city was in decline, and the earthquake in the 1st century BC finally destroyed it.

Research and the first excavations of the ancient Pella date from the early 20th century, but large-scale systematic work began in the 50s of the 20th century .  During the excavation was found the monumental palace complex - the residence of the Macedonian kings, and, in fact, the very ancient Pella, located just south of the Palace .  The city is built in accordance with urban planning system of the famous Greek architect Hippodamus with rows intersecting at right angles to the streets .  The city center is City Agora, surrounded by a colonnade and covers an area of ​​about 70,000 square meters . m . , In whose territory the shops, workshops, administrative buildings, etc. . d .  Pell has also been equipped with water and sanitation .  Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of single- and multiple-storey residential buildings (some of them have survived the stunning beauty of the pebble mosaic floor), as well as the remains of the city walls, the ruins of the city's harbor (in ancient times was connected to Pella Thermaikos Gulf shipping lagoon) and the ancient burial .  Part of the archaeological site is now available for travelers .

Ruins of Ancient Pella recognized as an important historical and archaeological sites and is under state protection. The excavations going on here and now, and it is likely in the future we expect new and exciting discoveries.

In 2009, the territory of the site of Ancient Pella opened Archaeological Museum, which is considered one of the best museums of its kind in Greece.
