Lichtenstein Castle - a medieval castle, which is located near the town of Maria Enzersdorf south of Vienna, in the federal state of Lower Austria on the edge of the Vienna Woods. From the name of the castle there was the name of the family of Liechtenstein.

The castle was built in 1135 by order of Count von Liechtenstein. The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1330.

It is known that the castle often changed owners. At various times, the hosts were Khevenhiiller Austrian family, the Hapsburgs, the Hungarian King Matthias. The Turks attacked the castle twice: in 1480 and then in 1529 when the campaign against Vienna. That's when the castle was destroyed. It is known that for some time the castle and remained in ruins, and then was re-built because of the threat of a new attack of the Ottoman Empire. In just 5 years after the reconstruction of the castle was again destroyed.

In 1807, he bought the castle by Johann Joseph Prince of Liechtenstein, who fought at Austerlitz. The full-scale restoration of the castle began only in 1890 under the leadership of a group of architects, who took 13 years to complete the work.

However, like a castle haunted by bad luck: he was again almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. In 1945, when Austria was divided allies (USSR, USA, France and Great Britain), the castle of Liechtenstein was in the Soviet zone of influence.

In 1968, the restoration of the castle took up volunteers from the nearby town of Maria Enzersdorf. Shortly after the reconstruction, the Principality of Liechtenstein has decided to transfer the lock in long-term lease to the authorities of the city, where to address them since 1983 has been held the music festival named Nestroy (known opera singer in Austria). After the lease period has expired, and the castle returned to the possession of the Principality, it remains closed to visitors since 2009.
