The ruins of an ancient castle Aggshtayn are one of the very interesting and mysterious attractions of Lower Austria. The castle was founded in the XII century, on very favorable defensive positions. Previously, the castle occupied territory of 1 hectare, relied on the mighty wall of rock, and the upper part of the castle rose na300 meters above the Danube.
In 1181 the castle has appeared in possession type of Kyunringen. In 1230 Kyunringen revolted against Frederick II, who was forced to besiege and capture the castle. Several years later, the former owners of the castle managed to bring him back, to improve relations with the emperor. But the good times did not last so long, Kyunringen barons rebelled again, but this time against Albrecht I. Thus, in the years 1295-96 the castle was re-conquered by the troops of the emperor and selected by his masters. But this time Kyunringenam managed to regain his castle. This time they were the rightful owners until 1355.
In the XV century, the emperor gave the castle Albrecht V Georg von Wald. The emperor wanted to clean up the castle, and the castle do some sort of customs to trade on the Danube following the court to pay the duty. These capabilities and unlimited power von Wald turned in a greedy robber. Corrupt practices looting of sailing ships continued until 1477, when the emperor put an end to stealing, taking the castle.
In 1529 the castle was completely looted by Turkish troops. After this period, followed by a series of more and more owners who cared little for the preservation and maintenance of the castle until 1930 Aggshtayn bought Earl Zaylern-Aspag, whose family owns it today.
In the early 2000s, it was carried out large-scale repairs with state support. As part of this project has been updated stonework, repaired sewerage and water supply, set up a ballroom.
Today the castle Aggshtayn visited by about 55,000 tourists annually.
