The Anglican church of St. Peter's Eaton Square stands on the eastern side of this famous square in the fashionable quarter of Belgravia. Church decoration Belgravia, has an interesting history - it destroyed the hatred and love regained.
The church was built between the years 1824 and 1827, during the first construction Eaton Square. The project is in the classical style designed by the architect Henry Heykvill: portico with six Ionic columns, clock tower, blank gable, no jewelry - all very simple and elegant. In 1875, the church expanded in the eastern part there was an altar in the Romanesque style, but the classic form of the facade remained unchanged.
St. Peter's Church - Anglican parish of the Catholic tradition. Perhaps that is why in 1987, set up anti-Catholic madman decided that this parish belongs to the "Papists," and set fire to the building. A few hours later it was all covered with fire. The next day, when the embers have cooled, it became clear: only survived Georgian wall. The roof collapsed, the situation was almost completely destroyed.
Architects Breysueyty Nicky and John, the couple lived in the neighborhood and have seen the fire. They decided that the church will revive from the ashes, and made it to the task of coming up with love and delicacy. Breysueyty did not demolish the walls and build everything completely anew, they decided that the remaining "shell with lovely proportions" - a legacy that must be preserved. At the same time it was necessary to take into account the wishes of the Vicar, and he knew exactly what he wants to receive not only the new interior of the church, but also apartments for the priest, minister, music director, rooms for meetings and concerts, room for a kindergarten, a large room for the youth club and all this under the same roof.
Breysueyty fulfilled all wishes, provided even a toilet for the disabled (a rarity for the old church buildings). The interior of the temple has become a very elegant: white and yellow walls, huge windows that freely pours light golden mosaics in the apse behind the altar, unusual tower with lights - everything is modern, stylish and at the same time simple and not pretentious. Near the apse is preserved part of the old altar, untouched by fire - as a sign of connection time.
