St. George's Cathedral, located in the eponymous square - one of the gems of Lviv late baroque architecture. This - the main shrine of the Greek Catholic Church. Construction of the cathedral designed by Bernard Meretin lasted from 1744 to 1764 years. Completed construction Fesinger Sebastian.
The cathedral is located on a hill that allows you to see its golden dome of the many corners of the suburbs of Lviv. The architectural ensemble includes the Metropolitan Chamber, the bell tower, the chapter house, surrounding the cathedral on three sides, and the gate decorated with statues of saints.
By the very temple can be reached by stairs decorated with a balustrade and statues, as well as numerous lamps. On the main facade statues sv.Afanasiya and sculptor Leo I.Penzelya. Above, on the attic, it is a sculptural group of works by the same author - "Yuri Zmeeborets."
The interior of the church draws its splendor and beauty. Royal and deacon at the altar of the gates made S.Fessingerom in 1768. In the church there are two miraculous icons - the icon of the Virgin Terebovelskoy seventeenth century. and the Kiev-Pechersk Icon of Our Lady of the seventeenth century.
In the cathedral are the crypt-tomb, the burial place of prominent Ukrainian Church: Cardinal Sembratovych Sylvester, Metropolitan Sheptytsky, Vladimir Sterniuk Cardinals Joseph Blind UGCC, Myroslav Ivan Lubachivsky. In the tomb are buried the remains of Prince Yaroslav Osmomysl Galitsky, who lived in the twelfth century.
In the 90 years of the twentieth century, the cathedral was returned to believers, and since then the temple being restored. In 2001, during his visit to Ukraine, Pope John Paul II lived in the metropolitan Palace Cathedral of St. George.
