Horse racing is very popular in Finland. In 1909. as a result of breeding, there has been bred special breed thoroughbred horses Finnish. For the first time in Lappeenranta equestrian events were held in 1817. Then they became an annual event.

In 1973 the city built a large racetrack "Ravirata" on 570 seats. At the same time there have been carried out and the first race. Each year, the racetrack is visited by about one million viewers.
