In the second half of the XIX century unfolded construction of new buildings and the landscaping around the Kuressaare Castle. All this started with the acquisition of the status of the resort town of Kuressaare, thanks to the discovery of deposits and the active use of medicinal clay. Those years here, for treatment and rest, a large number of people arriving. Therefore, it became necessary to bring the area around the castle in order.

In 1861, a park was created the committee, which is responsible for the establishment and functions of fleet management. This time of year is considered the base city park of Kuressaare.

Since the founding of great assistance rendered urban residents by providing funds, seedlings, in addition to the construction work, they offered horses and carts.

The park was laid out on the site of the old church and the wasteland around the fortress. To honor the memory of those who have been buried in this church and its walls, a monument was erected. In 1930, in the city park of Kuressaare from the University of Tartu were brought rare plants. Thanks to what is now before us is a beautiful park where you can find about 80 species of trees and shrubs. The park regularly hosts open-air concerts.
