Fort "Schantz" is a monument of architecture and history of the XVIII century. There are other name Fort - The Alexander battery and "Alexander and Nicholas Trench." Located on the western outskirts of the city of Kronstadt. Fort is an object of cultural heritage and is under state protection.

Fort "Schanz" was constructed in 1706, during the Northern War to protect the city from the Swedish army. It was an earthen redoubt erected in front of the right flank modern battery.

At the beginning of the XIX century, nearby, on the southern coast of the island of Kotlin, it was built wooden-"Alexander" battery. Additionally, for the defense of the approaches to the two fortifications. Between them, there was the small size of the infantry redoubt "Michael." In the summer of 1855, all these structures radically rebuilt in the rapid amplification of Kronstadt, because of the threat of attack from the Anglo-French squadron. Now, on the north shore stationed battery number 7, called "Alexander-trench" in the south - the battery number 8, "Nicholas-trench", and between them was a battery of letters "B", which later became known as "curtain".

Strengthening seriously modernized, and they lasted until the end of XIX century. Then in their place, it was decided to build a complex long-term type of battery, called the fort "Schanz". In 1897, construction began on the central (mortirnoy) and northern (gun) batteries. It lasted five years. Buildings were made of concrete project forts "A" and "B" taken as a basis. But they make the necessary changes on the local conditions. Cannon battery, in addition to the main armament, equipped with four guns, designed to deal with possible enemy landing. To highlight adjacent plot raid on the right side was placed a spotlight, which, if necessary hiding in the mine. After some time on the left wing group it was built south (cannon) battery, similar in construction, equipment and armament of the north.

By the 30th year of the XX century battery "Schanz" was lost its military significance, arms lifted, and in the liberated part of the casemates was decided to establish the command post of the Commander of the coastal defense of the Baltic Sea.

During the Great Patriotic War on the battery "Schanz" was not installed stationary coastal guns, but at the same time, there has a separate railway artillery battery number 19-A (two guns caliber 180 mm) to move around the branch Kronstadt - "Reef".

Currently, the state of the fort "Schantz" is assessed as unsatisfactory.
