Temple of the Tooth Relic (Dalada Maligawa Sri), built in the 17th century, is located in the city of Kandy, which is a long time on the right is the center of Buddhism. It is believed that there is the upper left canine tooth of Buddha. This precious relic attracts pilgrims in white robes, carrying lotus blossoms and jasmine, every day.

According to legend, the tooth was taken from the Buddha when he was lying on the funeral pyre. He was smuggled to Sri Lanka in 313 AD in the hair of Princess Hemamali that ran from the Hindu army besieging the kingdom of her father in India. Tooth immediately became an object of worship and veneration, he was regarded as one of the precious relics. He was taken out only for special occasions and bring into the backs of elephants, which are sacred animals. Countless attempts have been made to capture and destroy the tooth.

When the capital was moved to Kandy, the tooth was brought there; he was placed in a temple built in his honor. The temple was built by the rulers of Kandy between 1687 and 1707, but then suffered a lot during the colonial wars against the Portuguese and the Dutch in the 18th century. After the war, the original wooden buildings were rebuilt in stone. In January 1998, a Hindu-Tamil separatists blew up the temple, damaging its facade and roof. Restoration began immediately afterwards.

Church building does not look great or ornate. White with red roofs, they are grouped around the Kandy Lake. The stark contrast with the simple appearance of the interior of the temple is richly decorated with carvings and inlays of wood, ivory and lacquer.

Around the entire complex is a low white stone wall, with elegantly carved a hole in it. During celebrations to insert a candle, illuminating the temple. Tooth is located in a two sacred repository. The relic is on a golden lotus flower, concluded in precious casket lying on the throne.

It also joined the church tower built in 1803 and originally the former prison. Currently, it holds a collection of manuscripts on palm leaves. The palace of the king also attached to the temple.
