Maha Viharaya Malvathu is one of the oldest Buddhist sangha (community) monastic order Siam Nikaya. Located on the lake, where there is a temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy Maha Viharaya Malvathu consists of two buildings made for living the monks. First - Uposatha Viharaya - also called Poyamalu Viharaya and the second - Pushparama Viharaya - called Malvathu Viharaya and is a newly built octagonal building. The older Poyamalu Viharaya is said to have been built in the late 15th or early 16th century, King Senasammatom Vikramabahu.

Historians suggest that Vikramabahu built another 86 to other monasteries of monks and fraternities Malvathu Asgiriya Viharayas. Maha Viharaya Malvathu was originally built for housing in all three. Sangaraha Pansala intended for the great monk Velivita Sarankara Tepo, Sibotuvave Pansala and Poyamalu Viharaya was built for the chief monk Sibotuvave Tepo and Meda Pansala - teacher of the king, Raja Guru. Today, as the number of monks has been growing steadily in Maha Viharaya Malvathu lives the entire executive board of monks Karaka Maha Sangha Sabha. Mach Nyack lives there, as the chief priest of the monastery, as well as one of the defenders of the Tooth Relic. Two other custodian also live here. There are other religious figures living in the monastery, such as the keeper of the laity Dzhiayadana Neelam.
