Among the attractions of the Greek city of Kalavryta and the surrounding area deserves special attention Makelariya monastery. It is located about 30 km from Kalavryta, on the right bank of the river Selinountas, near the village of Lapanagoi, on top of a steep scenic cliffs and offers a fantastic panoramic views and an incredibly relaxing atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
Makelariya Monastery is one of the oldest Orthodox shrines in Greece. It was founded in 532 by decree talented commander of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I Belisarius, is trying to make amends for the brutal suppression of the uprising of the notorious "Nika" in Istanbul (the largest revolt in the history of Byzantium and Constantinople). Initially, the holy abode called "Monastery of the Virgin Mary Litostrotiotisy" (probably because of its location on the cliff top). Its modern name of the monastery was in the second half of the 15th century, after a brutal massacre by the Turks here in 1458.
Chief KATHOLIKON Monastery - Holy Trinity Church, made in the Byzantine style. In a luxurious wooden iconostasis you will see the main relic of the monastery and a fine example of Byzantine art - the miraculous icon of the Virgin. It is said that this icon has a highly original feature: wherever in the temple you are, it seems that the Virgin is watching you. Near KATHOLIKON is a small Church of the Assumption, and just below the monastery complex in a small cave is another temple - the Chapel of the Transfiguration, where over the altar directly from the cliff all year has healing power.
