Center for Arts and Crafts "Jerusalem House of Quality" - is a museum, a gallery and a workshop. In addition, the center - an example of careful attitude to the artists of the state.
Non-profit organization "Jerusalem House of Quality" originated in 1963 with the support of the Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi: statesmen wanted to promote the artists and craftsmen of Jerusalem. Center and now pursues this goal: to create an environment in which creative people can work productively. They provide workshops to help organize exhibitions. However, not every artist can get a place in the center of all undergo a rigorous selection: the name means that the local work - high quality, they are, figuratively speaking, bear the stamp "Made in Jerusalem."
The house, which is the center - one of the most interesting historical buildings in town. It was built in the twenties of XX century British architect Clifford Holliday as the new wing of the Hospital Charity Eye Hospital - the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. The main hospital building, built in the XIX century, suffered during the First World War, and the task was not only to Holliday renovate the old building, but also to build new ones. Two new body divided Hebron road, and connected by a tunnel under the ground. In one, easier, now a museum cableway Mount Zion, and across the street, a large and spectacular - "Jerusalem House of Quality".
Holliday built this building in eclectic style, mixing elements of Eastern and European architecture, with a clear hint of a medieval English castle. However, the courtyard, surrounded on all sides by walls - a typical detail of Jerusalem houses of the XIX century. Since the money donated for the construction of the British aristocracy, the facade and the walls of the courtyard are decorated with their coats of arms. One of the undoubted attractions of the house - "Armenian Room" with a magnificent ceramic tiles Armenian painter David Oganesyan, he created in 1925. Walls covered with tile in blue-blue pattern with green cypress in the middle - the pearl of the room. Black-and-white mosaic on the ceiling depicts a stylized Maltese cross.
Metal fence balcony on the second floor also attracts attention. Those who have been in the Knesset will recognize the style of the sculptor David Palombo - like grille stands at the entrance to the Israeli parliament.
Yet in the "Jerusalem house of quality" visitors are interested in not only the building itself. Here you can buy unique works of art and watch how the potters, jewelers, painters, glassblowers, sculptors, mozaisty, chasers, masters for the production of items of Judaica. Here are regularly held exhibitions, concerts, lectures, seminars, conferences, musical evenings - the center lives a rich cultural life. On the roof of the building, which is required to be up, offering stunning views of Jerusalem.
