Bhimbetka rock caves - this is a truly unique place, located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, in the district Reisen. Bhimbetka is one of the earliest sources on which to judge the "culture" and way of life of prehistoric man. According to research scientists, some of these caves were used as shelters and housing anthropoid homo erectus another hundred thousand years ago. So, some of the rock carvings found there, there are more than 30 thousand years.
The name of the caves connected with the name of the divine hero Bhima from famous folk epic the Mahabharata, who was known for his incredible strength. The word "Bhimbetka" comes from "Bhimbaithka", which means "the place where Bhima sitting."
Bhimbetka Caves are located 45 kilometers from the city of Bhopal, the south side of the Vindhya mountain range. The whole area is covered with lush vegetation and a rich fauna.
For the first time, archaeologists are interested in this place in 1888, thanks to the stories of the local tribes. Later, from the mid XX century, it has been studied in more detail famous Indian archaeologist Vishnu Shridhar Vakankarom. Since then, in this territory were discovered more than 700 caves, shelters, of which 243 relate specifically to the group of Bhimbetka, and are marvelous caves of different sizes, smooth walls and rounded shapes which led scientists to believe that once this area was under the water.
The huge popularity of the cave acquired through a large number of rock paintings depicting various scenes from the life that inhabit them at the time. For example, there you can see scenes of birth, ritual dances, collecting honey, hunting, "buried", as well as images of plants and animals.
Bhimbetka rock caves are a place entered in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
