   Photo: The Island of Chrissi

Chrissi Island - a small uninhabited Greek island, located approximately 15 km to the south of the island of Crete (near the town of Ierapetra) in the Libyan Sea. 700 m to the east of the island is a small island Mikronisi. Both islands belong to the municipality of Ierapetra (prefecture of Lasithi).

The island is a fairly narrow strip of land 5 km long, 1 km wide and an average height above sea level of 10 m. The highest hill of the island called "Kefala" and has a height of 31 m. On a hill offering stunning views over the forest of cedar of Lebanon, possibly the last such forest in Europe. The density of trees is 28 units per hectare, the average height of a tree 7 meters and an average age of 200 years.

In the western part of the island you can see the well-preserved old chapel of St. Nicholas (presumably 13th century BC), a bowl of salt, the old port, the Minoan ruins, some Roman tombs and a lighthouse. During the Byzantine period, the main income of the islanders were fishing and salt production. Later pirates forced the locals to leave Chrisi, and have themselves become sometimes use the island as a temporary shelter.

Today uninhabited island Chrissi is a conservation area and a favorite tourist destination in the summer, who want to enjoy the peace and natural surroundings. Fresh water on the island is not. Chrissi Island is famous for its sandy beaches and clear water. Since the depth of the coastal waters of the south and north of the island is less than 10 m (1 km), snorkeling and scuba diving are popular activities here. In the south of the island is a tavern where you can eat and buy refreshments.

Getting to the island is possible from Ierapetra. From mid-May to late October organized daily excursions to the island.
