Portaria Greek village - one of the most colorful and interesting settlements Fesalii. Portaria is located at an altitude of 650 meters above sea level on the slopes of the scenic Mount Pelion is about 13 km from the city of Volos (the capital of the nome of Magnesia). It is ideal for lovers of quiet and moderate relaxation.

It is believed that its current name received from Portaria based here in the 13th century church of Panagia of Portaria, around which, in fact, was built a settlement. Today, the ancient church with well-preserved frescoes and magnificent unique icons is one of the main and oldest tourist attractions.

During the reign of the Ottoman Empire began to develop actively Portaria significantly increased and the population. Already in the 18th century Portaria became an important commercial and industrial center of the region. Products made of silk, produced here, are known far beyond the modern Greece. The wealth and prosperity of the city is beautifully expressed in the magnificent old mansion, built in the period and well preserved to this day.

Despite the fact that over the past decade Portaria has become a very popular tourist destination, here it preserved the charming atmosphere of an authentic Greek settlement with the traditional for the region architecture (new buildings and decorated in the same style). Today, Portaria - a beautifully restored old mansions (some of them turned into hotels and pensions), cobbled streets, filled with fountains and an abundance of greenery. A popular place for residents of Portaria and its guests, of course, the main square around which holds much of the cozy restaurants and cafes, had taken refuge in the shade of plane trees. On the square are also the ruins of the "Mega Theoksenia" (1898-1944) - one of the most luxurious hotels in the Balkan region, which, unfortunately, was destroyed during the Second World War.

Among the local attractions is also highlight the church of St. Nicholas (1856) and the Byzantine Monastery of St. John is located on the road to Makrinitsa.

You should definitely take a walk in the picturesque surroundings of Portaria and walk along the famous "Path of the Centaurs."
