The ancient settlement Biskupin is located 40 km south-west of Bydgoszcz in Greater Poland, near the village of Biskupin, home to 320 residents.
As a result of the sharp fall in the water level in Lake Biskupin in 1933 archaeologists found traces of an ancient settlement. Excavations were begun in 1934 by specialists Rajewski and Kostzhevskim and were until the beginning of World War II. In the postwar years, the work was resumed. Due to the specific composition of the sludge in the area of construction and household items are well preserved. Archaeological excavations in Biskupin were innovative and laid the foundation for experimental archeology. During these works the first time in Poland documentary photography has been applied from the air.
Studies have shown that the settlement dates back to around 550 BC It was also found that the area left in the Iron Age. The settlement had about 11 street width of 2 meters and 5 106 houses that were close to each other. The settlement was surrounded by a high wooden fence and shaft width of about 3 meters and a length of 640 meters. It is believed that the settlement can live from 800 to 1,000. During the work it was found more than 6 million different items, most of which say that the population was engaged in cattle breeding and agriculture. The most interesting finds include dishes, looms and weapons for hunting and fishing.
Today settlement Biskupin is a museum where you can see recreations of streets and houses, to get acquainted with the life of the ancient inhabitants. Every year in September the Festival of Archaeology.
