Natural History Museum of Gothenburg is located in the park Slottskёgen. A modern building designed by the architect Ernst Torulfa was opened July 9, 1923. Based same museum was October 31, 1833 on the orders of the Royal Institute of Science and Natural History, and for nearly a century, it served as the home of the former office of the East India Company in the center of Gothenburg (now home to the City Museum). Today, the Natural History Museum is the oldest museum in the city.
Entrance to the museum is located in the new part of the building, which is devoted to special projects and temporary exhibitions. There is also a lecture hall and a cafe, which can taste food made from natural and organic products not only visitors to the museum, but just strolling in the park citizens. In the old part of the building has a permanent exhibition, mainly of the models and stuffed animals and insects from all corners of our planet. The permanent exhibition is largely not been updated since the early 1970s, so attentive visitors can notice some inaccuracies and shortcomings. For example, reclassification of weak species, or references to Angola as a Portuguese colony.
The most famous exhibits of the museum is the Malm whale and the African elephant. Young blue whale has been found off the coast of the fjord in the south of Askim in Gothenburg in 1865. The African elephant was gunned down Dec. 4, 1948 in Angola by the then curator of the museum. Age elephant at that time was 45 years old, and its weight - 6 tons. In the manufacture of the exhibit it took about three years. Today stuffed African elephant Natural History Museum Gothenburg recognized the best experts in the world.
