Botanical Garden of the city of Gothenburg is one of the leading and largest botanical gardens in Europe. Its construction was initiated by the city council on the generous donations of townspeople. The opening of the Botanical Garden in 1923, was dedicated to the 300th anniversary of Gothenburg. Until 2001, the garden was owned by the city, however, was later transferred into the possession of Westray.
The main contribution to the establishment of the garden has made a prominent botanist Carl Scottsburg, who made several research trips around the world to get samples of rare plants.
The total area of the Botanical Gardens is 175 hectares, most of which are reserved for the protected areas, including the Arboretum. The area of the garden itself, which is constantly cultivated, is about 40 hectares, and it grows up to 16 000 different plant species. Among them of great scientific importance and high collection of bulbous plants and trees of the temperate latitudes.
Rock Garden is the holder of two stars, according to the Michelin Green guide. Other attractions of the Botanical Garden, are definitely worth seeing: the valley of rhododendrons, Japanese garden and greenhouses with about 4,000 different plants (including about 1,500 species of orchids).
In 2003, the Gothenburg Botanical Garden has been named the most beautiful garden in Sweden, and a number of its employees has been marked by both national and international marks of distinction.
