A small village called Hampi is located on the border of the southern Indian states of Karnataka and Goa, among the ruins of the once magnificent city Vidzhayanaga, the ancient former capital of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire. The name of the village has acquired through the river Tungabhadra, on the banks of which it was built. Ancient its name sounded like "Pampa". And the word "Humpy" comes from anglofitsirovannogo "Hampe" - pronounced as "Pampa" on ancient Kannada, which was and still is very common in the south-west of India, especially in the state of Karnataka.

According to historical records the first settlement in this territory appeared in I century. And already since about 1336 it has turned into a major cultural center.
