The idea of ​​creating this museum appeared in the exhibition "The Art of India", which was held at London's Royal Academy, in 1947-1948 years .  Upon its completion, it was decided to show this exhibition in India, building Raskhtrapati Bhavan - the residence of the President of India .  The exhibition was a huge success, and that was the impetus for the creation of a full-fledged institution, which would be operated on a permanent basis .  In 1949, the National Museum has officially started its work .  But only in 1960 it was built a new building, which is now a museum collection .  On its two floors, hosting more than 200,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years of Indian history .  Among the exhibits are made of clay, wood and metal sculpture, toys, jewelery, archaeological finds, weapons and uniforms, paintings, manuscripts, books .  The most famous part of the collection are relics knit with Buddha, which occupy a separate section .  In addition to the historical treasures, the museum also has things related to modern art .

At the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, which is under the care of the National Museum of New Delhi, in 1989, when it created the Institute of Art History and Museum, which hosts lectures on art history, conservation and restoration of works of art and museum exhibits.
