The process of India's independence was a difficult and time-consuming. One of the main actors who have contributed to the realization of this cherished for many Indian inhabitants of dreams into reality, was a man by the name of Jawaharlal Nehru. He later became the first Prime Minister of an independent state already. The people of India remembers and loves of public and political figure, however, after his death in 1964, were based Memorial Museum and Library named after Jawaharlal Nehru, in order to save the history of the people's movement for freedom.

The museum is an autonomous organization, established on the basis of Ministry of Culture on the territory of Teen Murti House - the residence of first Prime Minister. This building was built in 1929 for the Commander in Chief of the British Army, and is now a center for the study of modern Indian history. West Wing, Teen Murti House set aside for the library, and occupies the east wing of the museum.

The library houses many memorial documents, books, manuscripts and letters, which, significantly, starting in 2011 can be viewed on-line. Also, there are books and manuscripts of Jawaharlal Nehru, and their translations into different languages.

In the museum you can see photos and personal belongings of Jawaharlal Nehru, the gifts that he gave the head of the different states. Also part of the museum is located in the Teen Murti House Planetarium.

After creating a memorial museum has gathered a huge number of exhibits that was necessary in the construction of an additional building for storage. Therefore, by 1989, it was erected next to another building, which houses the Center for Advanced Study.

Every year on 1 April, the day of the museum, organized a day of the Annual Lecture, which is dedicated to Jawaharlal Nehru.
