Bottmyulle - one of the many towers that were built in the Middle Ages in Cologne. The wall was erected around the city, included more than fifty towers and 12 gates, because Cologne was considered perfectly protected fortress. Bottmyule Tower was built in the period of one of the extensions of the city, it is located far away from the no less famous towers and gates Bayenturm St. Severin. Until the early 16th century in its place was a wooden mill, which was called the Goat. We know that the architect of this building was Peter von Gleyel.
Soon the tree was decided to replace the stone. Architect Alessandro Paskvalini began its work in 1677, and a year later in Cologne, a new mill, successfully united the local basalt and tuff. It is noteworthy that the Italian previously worked in Cologne, creating defenses.
During the construction of the tower in the 16th century it had to expand to fit the width of the city wall. Originally the building was crowned with a beautiful conical roof, but soon it was rebuilt, giving it a flat shape. For a long time, while remaining a part of the best defense system in Europe - and it is known that Cologne has won this competition, even in Paris - in 1835 the tower was sold to private owners.
In the early 20th century, to be exact, in 1911 the tower Bottmyule again moved to the city, and it was published by one of the offices. The history of its use, and remembers the headquarters of the youth movement - the famous Deutsche Yugendshaft, who in the early 70s was replaced by the Socialist Youth Union "Sokol".
Today the tower is a real gem of the Middle Ages, preserved the style and beauty. It should be noted that the structure is practically not affected in numerous wars, because the tower is interesting and as an architectural monument.
