Whale Alley - this archaeological structure, which is one of the most famous attractions of Chukotka. The mysterious and enigmatic structure, which until recently almost no one else knew, located north-east of Providence Bay in the Bering Strait on the island of Yttygran. Avenue stretches along the coast of the island at 500 meters.
It is assumed that the walkway was established in the XIV century., But it is possible that it created much earlier. Whale Alley was discovered in 1976 by a group of researchers of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR led by M. Members. One of the participants of the expedition wrote that the Whale Alley is the only example of Eskimo culture, which lost all historical information.
Whale Alley is a structure consisting of two rows of large bones of bowhead whales, dug into the ground near the shore. Near the coast is composed of a series of skulls of whales, which rises above the ground at 1, 5 m and a maximum width reaching up to 2 m. They are arranged in groups, each of which has a skull 2-4. In parallel, the second row is formed by a huge column of jawbones, a diameter of about 0, 5 m and a height of up to 5 m. To create avenues were used remains 50-60 adult whales.
Between the rows of jaw bones and skulls of meat is approximately 150 wells - storage facilities for food. Meat pit - is artificially created stone structures, laid out in the form of rings. Then at the end of the building on the side of the hill you can see built 50-meter stone path leading to the flat and circular platform surrounded by boulders. In the middle of the site there is a large flat boulder, next to which is built of small stones and filled with ashes center. Obviously, this place was a central sanctuary, which were common rites and rituals of representatives of villages in ancient times lived on the southeast coast of Chukotka Peninsula.
