Currently existing Cherepovets Museum Association - the largest complex dedicated to the museum exhibition with a collection of monuments, which accounts for more than half of the museum fund of Vologda region .  One museum association includes a museum of various profiles .  Today Cherepovets Museum Association is composed of the departments of Art Museum, Historical Museum, the Nature Museum, Memorial House-Museum of Vereshchagin, House Museum Milutin Ivan Andreyevich, Archaeological Museum, Children's Museum, Historical and Ethnographic Museum of Gali, Exhibition Hall, Literary -memorialny Museum Manor Severianin .  In addition, the museum owns the building, which are considered architectural monuments of wooden architecture of the first third of the 19th century - the manor house famous landowners Gali .  At the disposal of the museum is a scientific library, equestrian section, archive, and all sorts of clubs . 

Cherepovets Museum Association began its work in 1990 on the basis of one of the oldest museums in the Vologda region. The earliest mention of the museum belong to the 1870s. At that time, the museum was considered second only to the largest of the Novgorod Museum. The museum was opened on the initiative of the city manager Milutin IA and ethnographer and archeologist EV Autograph. Initially the museum did not have its own building, so the collection is stored either in the City Duma, or in teaching seminary. Because of this uncertainty, most things have been destroyed without return. In March 1891 there was a fire, which destroyed a large number of exhibits.

Next revival of the museum has occurred in 1895. Pidvysotsky NV, as a seminary teacher, and later became the museum's director, insisted that the City Council adopted a positive decision on the matter by the United Museum. On March 31, 1896 the grand opening of the museum. The first exhibition began its work in a small room of 15 square meters. m indoors Salt garden. At the opening of the museum fund had 3759 items that were received from amateur enthusiasts. At the moment, the fund Cherepovets museum association has more than 412 000 units.

In 1989, for the museum it was built stone building, located at the Alexander Avenue. The museum consists of department: Church of the archaeological, numismatic, natural-historical, ethnographic, industrial and book. In 1920, the opening of the museum of the local nature of AI Herzen, and the museum was renamed the Museum of antiquities. Soon, the museum received the status of scientific and research institutions, as well as perform the work entrusted to the Academy of Sciences. In 1928, it was built stone building, which houses the museum. During 1936-1937 years the museum has been transformed into a museum of local lore of the Leningrad Region, and later - to the museum of the Vologda region. In the first years after World War II greatly expanded the exposition area of ​​the museum by the exhibition hall and the opening of the new departments.

Today, the museum employs around 207 people, including 85 people - researchers .  The museum organizes various kinds of thematic museum lessons, exhibitions and lectures .  The exhibition, which is constantly present in the museum, often supplemented by temporary exhibitions not only from the stock inventory of the museum, but also from other Russian museums, works of folk craftsmen, artists and private collections .  Numerous scientific museum staff conduct ongoing work relating to scientific research in various fields of activity .  Each year at scientific meetings and round tables .  Tradition is carried out in the departments of the museum of musical-literary evenings, meetings with famous and interesting people, all sorts of presentations .  Cherepovets Museum Department has to cooperate in the promotion and preservation of culture and history with commercial entities, educational institutions and enterprises .
