National Carillon, or chimes - one of the largest belfries, consisting of 53 bells. Located on an island in the center of Canberra Aspen. 50-meter Carillon - it is a gift of the British Government on the 50th anniversary of the founding of Canberra. At the grand opening April 26, 1970 attended by Queen Elizabeth II.

In general, the carillon - that, as the body complex and an expensive instrument - he demands for himself a separate building. Sami Carillon bells are stationary and their tongues are connected to the keyboard. In 2004, the Australian Carillon was slightly remodeled - designers have upgraded the interior and added 2 new bells. Each of the 55 bells Carillon weighs 7 kilograms to 6 tons. Together they take chromatically 4, 5 octaves.

The bells in the carillon chimes every 15 minutes and every hour played little tune. They play all kinds of music - from classical to folk motifs. It is believed that the best place to listen to the sound of bells - in a radius of 100 meters from the tower, even though the sound is heard far beyond - the Parliamentary Triangle (the complex of government buildings), Civic and Kingston areas.

In addition to the wonderful music that can be heard in the carillon, it also can be reached by a small observation deck, which offers views of Lake Burley Griffin and Canberra Centre.
