In the area of ​​modern resort town of Byala, at Cape St. Atanas are the ruins of late antique fortress where still ongoing archaeological excavations. For the first time researchers have shown interest in this area in the late 19th century.

Scientists say that there was an ancient settlement in the area in the 6th century BC, later the fortress was built - Hellenic colony, called Aspro, which means White City. This name owes fortress white limestone cliffs that are also bizarre, rugged form. Extant ruins of the ancient city walls that surround and protect the village.

Here it was found fragments of ancient ship anchors, which were made of wood and stone. Together with other artifacts found in the excavations, they are available for viewing at the exhibition center "White rocks" ("Belita Rock").

Excavations by archaeologists from Varna there was discovered a unique artifact - a ring of gold, dating from the 6th century BC It is decorated with a replica of a miniature rotunda, which is in Jerusalem. This ring only once mentioned in the literature, it is believed that such ornaments were made only in the workshops of the emperor in Constantinople. Probably the ring with a rotunda was presented to the Patriarch of Constantinople to the local bishop. Decoration was found in the ruins of the house, consisting of two floors, which, presumably, the bishop and lived.

Excavations at Cape St. Atanas financially supported by the European Fund and the Government of Bulgaria. To work on an archaeological excavation, as well as to increase the attractiveness of the area for lovers of historical tourism has contributed more than two and a half million euros. Also planned development of infrastructure and landscaping of the area.
