One of the attractions of Burgos, the former capital of Castile, is the palace of the constables of the Casa del Cordón. It is located not very far from the bridge of Santa Maria, and is remarkable not only for its architecture but also historical events.
The palace was built in the 15th century in the Gothic style by John of Cologne and his son Simon. The building was quite large, with a central courtyard, two Gothic arches were similar to the arches in the monastery cloisters. On the south side is the main entrance, on the east side of the facade - front gardens. The quiet beauty of the majestic buildings harmoniously fit into the architecture of the city.
The building is decorated with multiple images of heraldic shields of the owner of the palace, made in stone. Above the front door, two such shields are connected with a rope, carved out of stone, similar to the times of the Franciscan monk, apparently, because of this element is also called the Palace House of Ropes. The house door is also decorated with a rope or chain. Throughout its history, the building of the palace was reconstructed several times, eventually lost some of its grandeur and nobility. Also, a palace area reduced in size by 1,500 square meters.
In the palace of the Casa del Cordón, there were several important historical events. This is where the April 23, 1497 there was a meeting of Christopher Columbus with the rulers of the country after his return from the second voyage to America. In the same year there was a wedding of Prince Juan, son of Ferdinand and Isabella, the daughter of Emperor Maximilian I. During long trips in the palace at various times stopped the King of Spain Juan Carlos I and Philip II. Since 1748 the palace Casa del Cordón has ceased to be a royal residence.
Currently, the palace Casa del Cordón - House Ropes - used as a cultural center. In its halls are exhibitions of famous and lesser-known artists in the concert hall, struck by the unique acoustics conducted performances of choral and chamber orchestras, pianists.
