In the district of Gamonal, formerly a suburb of Burgos, on the rue de Vitoria is the ancient church of Santa María la Real and Antigua de Gamonal.
The church we see today was built in the Gothic style at the turn of 13-14 centuries on the site of the old Romanesque temple, which remained one capital. There is a legend that in this place once was a wonderful phenomenon of the Virgin Mary, which was dedicated to the basilica built.
The church, built of stone, is characterized by simplicity and rigor of execution. The most prominent element of the facade is a rather massive tower with buttresses geometry. In terms of the building has the shape of a Latin cross with a single nave and a quadrangular apse. The interior of the different systems overlap vaulted ceilings. Noteworthy in the interior columns topped with capitals, which ornamented with floral motifs. The main portal of the building is shaped arches and decorated tympanum with sculptures depicting scenes of the coronation of the Virgin Mary. There are also images of the Royal Coat of Arms, surrounded by figures of angels.
Inside the church houses a collection of sculptures of the period of 13-18 centuries, of which the most notable are a crucifix and a statue of Virgin Mary sculpture "Annunciation" dating back to 13-14 centuries. It also exhibited a number of paintings, belonging mainly to the 16th century.
