Špilberk was founded in the second half of the XIII century. It was originally a Gothic castle of Czech kings, then - the residence of the Moravian Margraves, and since half of the XVII century, the castle is gradually turning into a mighty fortress in the Baroque style. The system also included the fortification fortress casemates, which was completed in 1742.
In 1783, as part of reforms of places in prison in the Austrian monarchy, Emperor Joseph II decided to build a fortress in shpilberkskoy prison for the most violent and dangerous criminals. A year later, it was implemented following the imperial edict: to put criminals sentenced to life imprisonment, in the deepest and most terrible dungeons. For this purpose, 30 cameras were built, knocked down from thick wooden planks and beams, to which the prisoners were constantly chained. Although these conditions the prisoners were only five years old, shpilberkskie casemates for its intended purpose and nature is a terrible prison of the Austrian monarchy. I operate it until 1855. So Špilberk became notorious as the "prison of nations".
Now here is the Museum of the City of Brno.
