The fifth fort of Brest Fortress - a branch of the memorial complex "Brest Fortress". Fifth fort - part of the defense system, built in the years 1878-88 and employees in order to stop the enemy on the distant approaches to the fortress.
The fort has a pentagonal shape and covers an area of 0, 79 square kilometers. It was built of brick and surrounded by an earthen rampart with a moat filled with water. Before the fort is located on the front caponier six guns, able to fire in two directions. Behind it built well protected from all sides barracks connected with an underground corridor caponiers (Poterna).
In 1908 it was decided to upgrade the fifth fort - cover it with a two-meter layer of concrete walls and build inspection gallery connecting the garrison to the side polukaponirami. To supervise these works was appointed captain Ivan Osipovich Belinsky.
In 1941, at the start of the war on the territory of the fort was the 3rd infantry battalion of the 44th Infantry Regiment, who was trying to break through the defense of the Brest Fortress, and later went to fight in the east. During the Nazi occupation the fifth fort was used as a warehouse, and then, in 1944, released by the 1295 th Infantry Regiment 160 th Infantry Division of the 70th Army.
For a long time the fort was abandoned and dilapidated. In 1997 it was granted the status of historical and cultural value, and conducted large reconstruction. Currently, the fort is a museum of "History of fortifications and weapons", the exhibition "Western outpost of the Fatherland", as well as a large collection of artillery weapons in the open area of the fort.
