Museum of "The Jews of Brest" was opened on 25 March 2011 in Brest, on the initiative of the Jewish public organization "Birsk." The exhibits for the museum began collecting in 2009. The main exposition of the museum tells about the life of the Jewish community in Brest, in the XX century, since 1920.
In the XVI century, Brest was called the Jewish capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1860 in Brest-Litovsk, there were only 8829 inhabitants, of which the Jews were 7510 people. On the eve of 1941 in Brest of 51 thousand people, more than half were Jews.
During the Great Patriotic War in Brest organized by the infamous Brest ghetto, almost all the prisoners who were killed in the Holocaust. The museum exhibition devoted to the Holocaust, talks about the tragic pages of the history of the Brest ghetto.
At the time of opening of the museum was represented by four sections - a total of 120 exhibits. This interesting historical documents, photographs, old prayer books, fragments of Torah, household items, incense vessels, fragments of the old decor for the Torah.
A separate section of the exhibition devoted to famous Jews, natives of Brest. Materials helps not only to collect the Brest Jewish community members, but also overseas Jewish communities.
Young museum plans to hold in the walls of exhibitions, competitions, excursions, and other interesting events and continues to collect interesting museum exhibits related to the life of the Jews of Brest. The museum plans to conduct extensive educational work among the youth.
