Church of St. Nicholas, located in Birobidzhan, street Sholem Aleichem - this is one of the iconic sights of the city. All the churches built in the Middle Amur region during the atheistic persecution suffered total or partial destruction. Nearly 70 years the area looked a spiritual desert, and only in 1999 the governor of the Jewish Autonomous Region Nikolai Volkov managed to unite the local people and their work to create the first church in the area. It was a small wooden church, consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas.
Blessing for the construction of the church was obtained in February 1997, the church developed a project of "Management of design works", and it was engaged in the construction of "Birobidzhanstroy." In June 1999, it was established and officially registered with the parish community.
The wooden church with a bell tower was consecrated bishop of Khabarovsk and Priamurskaya Mark in December 1999, just in the patronal feast day. Prior to the completion of the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Birobidzhan, in September 2005, the church received the status of a cathedral Birobidzhan diocese.
St. Nicholas Church in recent years has changed a lot due to the large community. So, at the church operates diocesan hospital, running a soup kitchen, a Sunday school. In addition, the walls of the temple are many fun activities that are educational in nature.
December 18, 2014, eve of the feast of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Birobidzhan and Kuldur Joseph spent in the Annunciation Cathedral of the Vigil with Akathist litia and saint, and on December 19 celebrated the Divine Liturgy and a moleben in the church of St. Nicholas.
