Annunciation Cathedral in the city of Birobidzhan is the first stone church in the history of this region.

In April 1990, the territory of the Jewish Autonomous Region thanks to the efforts of local residents in Birobidzhan was established in honor of the arrival of the Apostle James, the Lord's brother. To worship coming singled old wooden building on Kirov Street, where previously housed the People's Court. Soon, however, it is so dilapidated wooden building that was life-threatening parishioners. As a result, it was decided to demolish the old wooden building, and in its place build a new stone Cathedral of the Annunciation.

Construction work began in April 2003. In July of that year, when I finished the zero cycle, under the base of the eastern wall of the Temple were laid the coffin of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, the holy relics of Prince Theodore and his children David and Constantine, Yaroslavl miracle workers. In September 2004, the cathedral chapter topped by a cross, after which the liturgy was celebrated.

In the lower part of the church staged a church dedicated to St. James the Apostle, and the baptismal who consecrated bishop Joseph in August 2005. The main altar, named in honor of the Annunciation, was consecrated in September 2005. The Cathedral of the Annunciation to the procession were moved to the main shrine Diocese - the relics of St. Innocent, Metropolitan of Moscow and honored list Iberian Icon of the Mother of God, which was written in the holy Mount Athos.

By the end of 2005 we completed the construction of economic housing. In spring 2005, at the Cathedral began to build a two-storey building of socio-educational center Birobidzhan diocese. Construction work ended in September 2006, after which the building was consecrated.
