Maritime Museum in Biarritz is located near the city center. It stands opposite the rock of the Madonna. Built in the first half of XX century building easily recognizable by the characteristic features of Art Deco style - clear and strict lines, restrained facades, narrow elongated windows. At the end of the last century, the museum building was renovated. The first such exhibition in Biarritz has been opened in 1871 on the initiative of the Marquis de Leopold Folen involved in the study of Biscay.
The inner space of the museum is divided into four levels, which are located about two dozen aquariums. They live about 150 species of fish and marine animals that inhabit mainly the Bay of Biscay.
In addition to live sea creatures in the museum you can also see the skeletons of large marine mammals (whales and dolphins), which were found on the shore. They are represented in the lower level, there are also exhibitions devoted to the history of whaling and fishing. On these types of studies tell us documents, photos and movies.
On another level is a "shark cave", another level allotted seals and sea lions. It hosts live entertainment with their participation, museum visitors are allowed to be present at the feeding of animals. The real "stars" of the museum are the seals, their ideas always attract a lot of spectators and the public even know the names of these six artists pinnipeds.
The museum and the other inhabitants of the Gulf - turtles, mollusks and crustaceans. Several years ago, the museum installed a new aquarium, populated by representatives of the marine fauna of the Caribbean, the North Atlantic and Indo-Pacific area.
