Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) is located in the district of El Raval near the center of the modern culture of the city. The idea of ​​creating such a museum owned by the writer and art critic Alexander Cirii-Pellicer. This idea at the time was supported by many educated artists, critics and art lovers who have contributed to the creation of the museum's collection.

Development of the building for the museum was entrusted to the American architect Richard Meier, who in his draft used the simple geometric shapes, glass planes, a lot of white, reflective material. Built in a modern contemporary style on the interaction between the lines, surfaces, colors and movement through space, the building looks powerful and original, while the interior is simply mesmerizing.

Construction of the museum began in 1991, and November 28, 1995 Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona opened its doors to visitors.

The museum exhibits works of art from the second half of the twentieth century to the present time. The collection consists of more than 5,000 works, most of which is Spanish and Catalan art, there is also a large number of works by artists from around the world. Expressionism, realism, surrealism and other areas in the painting represented in the museum's collection. Funds of the museum is constantly replenished by private donations and acquisitions specialist museum. The museum building is also a library, which contains books, magazines, publications devoted to art. In the archives of the museum kept the original documents, such as letters, personal photographs, artists' books, invitations, posters, brochures, magazines, paper and digital manuals and audiovisual materials.

The Government of Catalonia Museum of Modern Art has been declared a national museum.
