Wat Pho existed before the founding of Bangkok. Here, General Chakri proclaimed himself king and took the name Rama I. On his orders, the ancient monastery was expanded.

The monastery is famous for its magnificent temple with a statue of Sleeping Buddha (Buddha waiting nirvana). 46-meter statue built of brick, plastered and covered with gold. Pearl inlay on the feet of the statue symbolizes the 108 signs that distinguish the Buddha from a mere mortal. The four large chedi built in honor of the first four kings of the Chakri dynasty, kept fragments of the Buddha's body (power).

Near the temple is a building of the library, which holds ancient manuscripts.
