Rocky Cape Sounion, deeply incised into the Aegean Sea, from ancient times symbolized the indissolubility of the sea and land. From the VII century BC Here was the sanctuary of Poseidon. In 480 BC, the sanctuary was destroyed by the Persians. In the middle of the V century was built a new church, the remains of which we see today.

On the eastern side of the main road remained Ionic frieze consisting of thirteen marble pit. There were scenes of mythological battle of centaurs and Lapiths, as well as scenes from the life of Theseus, the son of the god Poseidon. Initially, the temple was surrounded by 34 marble columns. 15 of them have survived. Columns hewn grooves in order to reduce the damaging effects of sea air.

Who visited Sounion in 1810. Byron carved on one of the columns of his name. Now, all the columns are covered with inscriptions.

In Sounion is best to go in the evening to the sunset, when the columns of the temple appear a graphic print on the background of the setting sun and the darkening sky ...
