The Greek island of Spetses is located in the Aegean Sea near the Argolis. The island group is often referred to Saronic Islands, although he, in fact, is already in the Argolic Gulf. It is a small picturesque island with hills covered with pine forest. That is why in ancient times it was called "Pine Island". Not far from Spetses is a small green island Spetsopula, today it is privately owned.

The eponymous town of Spetses is the only major settlement on the island. In the center of the island is its highest hill, it bears the name of the prophet Elijah. The island is simple enough to get to, as it has a great waterway to the port of Piraeus. Until recently, the movement on the island for vehicles was banned. And now the main means of transportation are mopeds, motorcycles, bicycles and horse-drawn carts.

From 1821 to 1832 the island played an important role in the Greek war of independence against the Turks. September 8, 1822 near the island of Spetses was a fight between the fleets of the Greek rebels and the Ottoman Empire. Every year during the second weekend of September held the celebrations to commemorate the victory over the Ottoman Greek fleet. At the end of the action in the harbor burn mock the Turkish flagship.

On the waterfront is a statue Dapya laskarina bouboulina - the heroine of the Greek Revolution, the only woman who became Admiral of the Fleet. The monument created by renowned Greek sculptor Natalia Mela. The main attractions of the island include the Hadzi-Museum and the Museum of Janis Meksis Babulin.

Spice Island became the prototype for the island Fraksos of the famous novel by the English writer John Fowles 'The Magus'. Fowles himself once lived on the island and taught at a private school.

Spetses is a fashionable resort, here love to spend their vacations and the Greeks themselves. Lovely hotel with European service, plenty of expensive shops, restaurants and cafes allow visitors to the island have a great time. Unforgettable and will walk through the narrow streets on which there are well-preserved buildings of 18-19 centuries. The island also please tourists with numerous picturesque bays and luxurious sandy beaches, which are among the best in the region.
